Martin Luther King Font Update #41 May 2024 – Feature on TV, all vowel variations complete + a complete set of final n variations.

The MLK handwriting font was used to recreate a handwritten letter in the TV Series Geniuses MLK/X. You can read about it in more detail in → this post.

Seeing the font on screen I noticed that the final lowercase letters can stick out a bit. Here for example the final version of the letter “n”

Final forms are significant forms that grab attention, they kind of “stick out.” A design problem that I am addressing with this May 2024 update.

Now the font stores 4 variations of final “n” that are automatically exchanged as you type:

Vowel Variations

Following update #39 and #40, the May version completes all (mid-word) vowels variations for the Martin Luther King, Jr. handwriting font. Specifically variations for the letters o and u. Since vowels appear more frequently than consonants in words, having a broader range of vowel variations improves the overall look of the font.

All variations of “u” stored in the updated font.

All samples are from “An Autobiography of Religious Development.” Here you can see the vowel variations with the original manuscript sources:

The font changes the variations as you type. This video shows how the different variations come into play as you type; each keystroke alters the look of the text:

Usually this “exchange” is enabled by default. If you do not see the letters change as you type, you can find detailed information on how to activate the feature in the FAQ section. Alternatively, each font comes with quick start documents for a variety of software (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Pages, OpenOffice, InDesign, etc.) Each document is set up to apply all font features:

Attention: New Font Name

The font name, as it appears in your font menu changes with this update from “Martin Luther King (- 2024 February)” to “1929 Martin Luther King (- Handwriting 2024 May Update)” this helps with two things:

  1. The font will appear on top of your font menu
  2. The font will group with other handwriting fonts of historic figures from the library

I hope you find this useful.

Try for yourself

The new version is ready for download. It will appear in your font menu as “1929 Martin Luther King – Handwriting 2024 May Update.” I recommend uninstalling older versions to keep your font menu organized.
