Comparing handwriting and font.
Creating an authentic handwriting font requires a careful and thorough process of comparing the digital version to the original to ensure accuracy and capture the author’s unique style.

The development is not always a straightforward process. Often, there is a going back and forth to make improvements. The original analog version serves as a benchmark to measure progress.

Graphic Novel – The Truth about Lying
Images from “Münchhausen en Freud: De waarheid over het liegen” (Dutch) – “Münchhausen: Die Wahrheit über das Lügen” by Flix & Bernd Kissel.
“Münchhausen: The Truth about Lying” is a graphic novel about an encounter between Sigmund Freud and the literary figure Baron Münchhausen in London in 1939. Just days before Freud’s death, the British Secret Service approaches him to investigate a suspected German spy. Author Flix and illustrator Bernd Kissel used the font to reproduce Freud’s writing style authentically. When a Dutch translation was created, Sigge Stegeman employed the font to replace the German text with Dutch. This serves as an excellent example of using historical handwriting fonts to enhance a project’s authenticity.

History of the Font

The Sigmund Freud Font is inspired by a daydream of a person writing a letter to his or her therapist using a magical typewriter that transforms ones own words into the handwriting of Sigmund Freud. Exploring themes of authority and authenticity, this whimsical scenario led to the development of the Sigmund Freud Font.
Presented in a Kickstarter Campaign, the idea resonated widely, attracting 1,481 backers from around the world. Through this successful campaign, the project gained the support it needed to come to life, uniting the fields of typography and mental health.
